Is this seasoning? Is this a need to air out the chew? Or, does the rawhide need to be stored underground for a while? Some of the answer depends on which method of “storage” your pup uses. Maybe she only eat them when she’s pouting.
Here’s something cool: did you know that chewing gum in humans releases natural pain relievers called beta-endorphins? You know, the things that help runners feel great after a long run. I bet chewing on a rawhide does the same thing for dogs. Maybe she has a little pain or stress and just needs to work it out? It’s a great question. There may be more than one answer!
I have read where raw hide chew bones are not good for your dog because they can cause blockages in the intestines and throat.
Some dogs are very good at eating rawhides, some are not. If your dog does not do well with rawhide, then it’s best not to offer it. There are some dogs who chew rawhide well: gnaw to itty bitty pieces and eat them slowly. For these dogs, rawhide is fine. The observant dog mom watches for problems then protects her baby before issues happen – just as you have done. The dog that eats the whole bone shouldn’t ever get one. Realize, any chew toy can be the same. I’ve seen where one dog chewed a rope toy in half then ate the knot to keep it from the other dog. Common sense is the key and if our dogs don’t have it, we have to have common sense for them!
