First, we have to figure out why your dog or cat has bad breath. Is it from tartar buildup on the teeth? If that is the case then the cure is usually a professional dental cleaning. If your pet has had his or her teeth cleaned recently and still has bad breath then there is something else going on.
My next step would be to see what your pet’s salivary pH is. This is a test of how much acid your dog or cat has in his or her mouth. Our pets should have slobber that is slightly acidic for normal oral health. If their saliva is not acid enough then bacteria will grow and cause odor.
Sometimes this is easy to correct by feeding food based on meat. Sometimes these patients need more stomach acid which can be supplemented with a capsule. Four dogs, it may be as simple as giving a natural, essential oil, oral disinfectant. Strong essential oils are not safe to give directly to cats.
