The answer to this question depends on the age of your pet and your lifestyle. Young animals, puppies and kittens, should be fed 3 to 4 times a day. Very small dogs, like Pomeranians, Chihuahuas and Yorkies, need to be fed more often as these puppies do not have the body reserves to store enough sugar.
As they get older it is usually sufficient to feed dogs two times a day. Some people in their lifestyle only feed the dog once a day. Personally, I know I eat more often than that. However, wolves certainly don’t eat 2 to 4 times a day; my dogs are far removed from being wolves.
Cats in the wild probably only eat once a day. Household cats will do well to be fed 2 to 3 times a day. Just like dogs though, they will tell you that they need to be fed more often. And, we have been told for the last 10 to 20 years that it is normal for cats to graze on food. This is an interesting story, and story it is, because barn cats do not graze. They hunt, they eat, they rest.
