It probably doesn’t surprise you, but I have a pet peeve about freeze dried pet food.
Don’t get me wrong – most freeze dried food is just fine. My pet peeve is that people are going around calling it raw.
Where did the idea that it’s raw come from? Actually, the FDA! About 12 years ago or so the FDA did what they called “raw round up”. They sent investigators out into the field to sample 80 different examples of raw pet food. The investigators came back with almost 50% freeze dried food. Because somehow they thought this was raw.
But let’s talk about that concept.
And we’re going to talk about strawberries to prove the point.
So, next time you go to the grocery store, start in the produce section and grab a container of fresh strawberries.
Now go to the snack aisle and get a bag of freeze dried strawberries.
Both of these are delicious. The freeze dried strawberries started out as fresh strawberries. But the freeze dried strawberries will never. Ever. Look like fresh strawberries again. They’re both delicious. They’re healthy. One’s more portable than the other one. Each one has its own advantages. But the freeze dried strawberries will never look like fresh strawberries again.
Right?
So, now look at that freeze dried food you have. It’s great. It’s convenient. It was raw once. And then it was freeze dried. All of the liquid was removed. Which makes it really easy to store. Good for hurricanes. Good for emergencies and winter ice storms. Great for feeding in general.
But- I don’t care how much water you put back into it. It will never. Ever. Return to its original form. It is not raw. That’s my only point.
It’s freeze dried food. Most freeze dried pet foods that I have seen are pretty darn good. They simply aren’t raw. Same as those strawberries.
I’m just saying…
