In an ideal world? Birth!

Did you know, animals, like humans, have about 30 bones in their head? Simply getting squeezed through the birth canal is enough to affect the cranial bones. So, it’s nice to have those loosened up so they can nurse well. And then, while you’re at it, it’s good to make sure that the pelvis is all lined up so they can poop well.

I know, I’ve not seen this very commonly, but I do have a few clients who have had me evaluate both the puppies and the mommy very quickly after birthing. Because the mom had to squeeze all those babies out through her birth canal, we need her pelvis to work well. In fact, it’s best to get her adjusted a couple of weeks before she gives birth so it’s easier for her to give birth, as well as afterwards.

So, now we have puppies who are adjusted somewhere around birth. As they start to move around, they turn into monster trucks. They use their heads as battering rams. They fall off of things. They slam into walls. They make their bodies crooked. (Cats are a little bit more nimble. They don’t do the monster truck thing so much but they do practice flying trapeze and they do sometimes miss their target.)

Anytime the body is crooked, it benefits from a chiropractic adjustment.

The need for adjustments can vary based on age and breed of your pet. For example, when they’re young, it’s great every 3 to 4 months to get that body lined up. You know, like keeping our car aligned. As they get older and the body begins to wear out, sometimes they benefit from more frequent alignments. Animals who have a history of disc disease, screaming neck pain, or simply genetically have a long back, like a dachshund or a corgi, could benefit from a monthly adjustment.

There’s really no such thing as too soon to start chiropractic. The sooner it’s something that you as the pet owner realize that animals benefit from, the sooner you can start giving your pets great care.

The idea with chiropractic is to prevent problems. It’s a lot easier to prevent them than to come along behind afterwards and try to fix them.
