Is this a trick question?
When I ask people this question in the office, they look at me like I’m crazy. They think it’s a trick question. But seriously, if your dog or cat is limping, does it always mean pain?
So let’s just talk about it for a minute. Let’s put this in terms of us humans because that always makes things easier to understand.
Imagine I go out to play soccer with my friends. We play in some field and there’s a hole that I stepped in and fell. I sprained my ankle.
The moment that I sprained my ankle, it hurts. And I’m limping right?
So maybe I get a little splint from the drugstore, walk funny for a couple of weeks but I continue to limp. It doesn’t hurt anymore. I’m still limping though. It’s all healed. I’m ready to go play soccer again. But I’m limping even though there is no pain.
So why am I still limping?
Because my body is out of alignment. Maybe it’s just my ankle that’s out of alignment. Maybe when I fell not only did I twist my ankle, but maybe I also twisted my pelvis. And then I walked around goofy for three weeks in that brace, keeping my pelvis. really crooked. Like a car that hits a pothole too hard, i’m simply out of alignment.
So just because I’m limping does not mean I have pain.
So then I go to the chiropractor, get my crooked pelvis lined up. Get the knee lined up. And the ankle that I twisted. None of this hurt either. Actually it feels really good when joints move how they are supposed to.
Now I’m no longer limping.
We can easily apply this to dogs, and even cats.
We all run around on the same planet. We all encounter the same potholes. We all do silly things and knock our body out of alignment. There may or may not be pain, but if we are limping, our body is out of alignment.
Car example: new cars drive nice and straight. Used cars can be quite crooked. That’s because they’ve hit too many curbs, speed bumps, and potholes. Everybody needs an alignment.
Alignment. Chiropractic. Massage. Spinal manipulation. Acupuncture. Chinese massage. There are a dozen rehab modalities that help lineup the body.
Pick one. End limping.
