There are a few things that go into the development of calcium oxalate stones (struvites are the most common type of stone). Calcium oxalate stones come from the urine being too acid (struvite is too alkaline) and our dogs not drinking enough, and a genetic predisposition made worse by stress. Too acid urine comes from too much meat or too much urine acidification from a prescription diet. The goal is healthy, middle range pH. So, feeding a balanced diet with a variety of nutrients will help with that. Raw and cooked foods have 75-90% more moisture than dry kibble – that’s the other part of the equation is adding moisture. Stress? Well, let’s remove diet stress and see how that affects things, and definitely avoid use of corticosteroids (but the allergies should be much better without the food allergy issue once you switch to healthy, balanced people food or raw diet).
