There have been many frightening reports in the news lately, from tainted jerky treats to questions about dog food safety, there is a lot to worry about.

After five years of investigation and hundreds of dogs dying, tainted jerky treats have finally been removed from the market. They were removed for the presence of adulterating drugs. The FDA reports they still don’t know why the dogs were dying from the jerky treats, however the drug residues can cause serious allergic reactions in humans and animals, like a terrible bee sting that can result in death.

More recently a nationally recognized pet food has been implicated in several dog deaths. As consumers the commercials lead us to believe pet food has healthy ingredients, yet these foods contain byproducts from the human food industry that are no longer acceptable for humans to eat. For example, food dyes that are implicated in hyperactive behavior and food preservatives that are implicated in cancer and asthma, and these foods are marketed as safe and healthy for our beloved four-legged family.

There is a lot to know about reading dog food or cat food labels, but the good news is there are safe and healthy foods to feed. While I love feeding people food to my family, I realize it is not for every pet owner, and I also realize raw diets are quite controversial. The convenience of kibble definitely weighs against more natural foods, however there are still some great products on the market.

This blog barely touches the surface of what is going on in pet food industry and I hope it raises more questions. My goal is for every dog and cat to be fed the best food possible.
