Talk about throwing the kitchen sink at the wall and seeing what sticks! Well, that’s what the FDA has done against Darwin’s pet food. Read here!

This starts out looking like a horrible list of things the company has done wrong. Most of this is BS.
.
The true issue at the heart of the problem is that the FDA despises bacteria. The FDA thinks we are all going to die and dogs and cats who eat food with bacteria in it -raw food- are going to kill us, the humans.
.
There has never been a case of a dog licking its butthole, then licking a human and causing disease. That’s OK – it doesn’t prevent the FDA from making that theory. And that’s what they’re going on.

So, this is what the case is really about. Darwin’s, like many raw pet food manufacturers, uses USDA sourced and passed meat or the equivalent. (There are some companies who use roadkill. I’m not talking about them.) This is the exact same meat you and I buy and put in our refrigerator- and eat.

This meat that you and I buy at the grocery store has allowable levels of bacteria in it. Because we humans are trained how to handle our meat, and how to cook it. Because we humans cannot handle eating the bacteria; we could get sick from certain strains.

But dogs and cats are different. I mean my gosh have you seen what they eat in the yard? They eat dead things. They wear dead things. So, we love them and we want to feed them high-quality nutrition. So, we feed them fresh meat. Well, it has bacteria in it. I just told you that.

But this is raw food for pets ! I am not supposed to eat it! Nor would I want to. Not unless it was cooked first. But that’s because I’m a human.

I’m gonna give you a few caveats:
- Not every bacteria gets us sick.
- There are six of 2600 different forms of salmonella that cause disease in humans . The other 2594 do not commonly get anybody sick.
- This is pet food. It is not designed for humans. Humans should not be eating it. If a human is eating it that is called mishandling it. And it would be the same thing as feeding xylitol to a dog. That is inappropriate. Xylitol doesn’t have a label saying don’t feed it to a dog. It’s not designed for dogs. It’s for people.

(Just because I’m talking about raw food here doesn’t mean that I think that’s the only option. Don’t get me wrong. There are lots of great food. I’m simply telling you why the DOJ/FDA threat isn’t stopping me.)

This is about the FDA’s zero tolerance policy in raw pet food. Nothing more.

I don’t suggest jumping ship simply because the FDA is making an egregious attack on a quality company. Who are you gonna jump to? Trust me. The FDA will go after them if it’s a raw pet food company.
