My short answer is acupuncture can help most conditions; I even use it carefully on my seizure patients! Personally, I use it more on internal medicine cases. Liver failure, kidney failure, and heart patients do better with acupuncture as part of their treatment. But, I also have great luck with disc cases. Dogs with presumed intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) have pain reduction and muscle relaxation from just one acupuncture treatment. There is excellent published research that shows acupuncture stimulates the body to release its own Beta-endorphins for wonderful pain control. Studies from the National Institutes of Health have proven acupuncture to be superior to surgery in human IVDD cases; so why wouldn’t it be great in our pet patients? It is!! Acupuncture is such an entire field of study. Watch for more blog posts on specific acupuncture points and/or conditions I treat with acupuncture.
